First lets set one simple rule in place before you start to Search Engine Optimize your page.  Your customers don't care how well search engines like it, they only care about what it has to offer them.  Don't get so caught up in flooding your site with major keywords, that your site reads funny, and confuses your customers.  They won't stay and they won't come back.  So as you write your content keep your customers in mind at all times, yet try to use your keywords.

Lets start with Meta Tags.  The three most important are the Meta Title, Meta Description, Meta Keywords.  Meta tags are important because they let search engines know what your site is about.  If you understand programming HTML code, then you know these tags are found between the <head> and </head> tags.  The first two are the most important.  The title tag, is the name of your site.  You should pick a name that describes your sites theme and is relevant to its contents.  Next is the description tag.  It will be a description of your site that some search engines will display in the search result.  The Meta Keywords used to be important because it is where you would list all of the keywords that are relevant to your site.  Over the years this has been widely abused.  People would stuff all the words they could think of here and even words that weren't all that relevant to the website.  Search engines like Google now place very little weight on the meta keyword tag.  It should still be used.  Google will still look at it to see if your keywords are relevant to the site.  Other search engines still place weight on these keywords.

Keywords - This is where we must fine tune our art.  As said before, Search Engines will place the pages at the top of the search that they feel are the most relevant.  They have complex codes that only they know about and keep very secret on how they work.  They will let customers know what they are looking for but will not divulge how there engines work.  People have fooled them in the past by doing tricks with their site only to in the end, get caught and sent to the bottom of the list.  Your best strategy?  Create a list of keywords that are relevant.  Don't just stick with one word at a time.  A keyword can be a whole sentence.  A key word is what a person types into a search engine just before they click on search.  Example: If I use the word "traffic" it will not describe my website very accurately.  If I use the keyword "gain web traffic" it's a more relevant description of my site.  I can also use keywords like "how to get more web traffic", "learn about SEO". These keywords not only get me a more specific customer, they are more relevant to my website and my visitors are more likely to stay.  When you type in your keywords between your meta tags, be sure to separate each one with a comma.  This will let search engines know where your keywords start and end.
